Aids and Hitler in the same category?

10 Sep

I was reading an article about the new AIDS prevention ad that was just released in Germany today. The message of this ad is very clear to the point that they went as far as comparing the most hated figure in the German history if not the world to AIDS.
The ad might come across a little raunchy but I think Europeans are a bit more open when it comes to sex and sex related issues, so it seems to be just very straight forward in my eyes. You have unprotected sense with a strange person you might as well get it on with a mass murderer. I think AIDS have been around for such a long time that it does not need sugarcoating anymore. The more clear the message is the better it would be understood.

I happen to dig a little deeper and found some interesting reactions to the video, some really hated and other thought it’s just another ad that falls on dead ears. I personally thought it was an interesting ad. I’ve seen plenty of AIDS prevention ads and after awhile they all look the same. I’m not saying they’re not working or anything like that, I just think the topic still needs the attention it needs to reach more people. Make it more interesting and people would be paying attention not just flip the channel and move on.

That’s my 2 cents about this ad. I managed to find the ad online so I’m goign to post a link for the video here. So if you are UNDER 18, EASILY EMBARRASSED BY SEXUAL IMAGES AND NUDITY AND ALL THAT DO NOT WATCH IT. I don’t need to get messages from angry mothers, bloggers and what not about this, consider yourselves warned!

What were the first words…..

10 Sep

Have you guys ever wonder what were the first spoken words over the telephone back in the day. What where the first test msges sent, even the first tweet!
Well, wonder no more. I recently read an article in Newsweek about this very topic. I found it very interesting and somewhat funny.
So here it is:

First Messages on Twitter, IM, Telegraph and More
Ian Yarett
Updated: 09/08/2009
This spring, we chuckled when Stephen Colbert asked Twitter cofounder Biz Stone if, given that the first message sent over the telegraph was “What hath God wrought?,” the first Twitter message was “What hath God twat?” Which got us to wondering: what exactly was the first message sent out on various modes of communication? Answers below:

TELEGRAPH: ‘What hath God wrought?’America’s first telegraph message was transmitted by Samuel F.B. Morse from the Supreme Court room in the Capitol to his assistant, Alfred Vail, in Baltimore on May 24, 1844.

TELEPHONE: ‘Mr. Watson-come here-I want to see you.’The first telephone call was made by Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, to his assistant Thomas Watson on March 10, 1876.

E-MAIL: ‘QWERTYUIOP’The first e-mail message was sent through ARPANET (precursor to the Internet) by Ray Tomlinson of BBN Technologies in late 1971, between two computers that were literally side by side but were connected only through ARPANET. The exact text has been forgotten, but it is reported to be something like this. The first spam e-mail message was sent via ARPANET on May 3, 1978, to 400 users by Gary Thuerk on behalf of the now long-defunct computer manufacturer DEC, advertising a new line of minicomputers.

AOL INSTANT MESSAGING: ‘Don’t be scared … it is me. Love you and miss you’The first documented AOL instant message (sent through the AOL client) was sent by future AOL vice chairman Ted Leonsis to his wife on Jan. 6, 1993. Her response: “Wow … this is so cool!”

SMS (TEXT MESSAGING): ‘Merry Christmas’Neil Papworth, an engineer at Airwide Solutions, sent the world’s first text message from a computer to a cell phone. The message was sent to Richard Jarvis, who was at a Christmas party near Vodafone headquarters in Newbury, England, in December 1992. The first commercial text message was sent from Los Angeles by Brennan Hayden, at the time an engineer for the Irish wireless company Aldiscon, in June 1993: “burp.”

SKYPE: ‘Tere, kas sa kuuled mind?’The first full sentence spoken over Skype was uttered in Estonian by an unknown member of the original development team in April 2003. Its English translation is “Hello, can you hear me?”

TWITTER: ‘just setting up my twttr’The first tweet was by Jack Dorsey, creator, chairman, and cofounder of Twitter, at 12:50 p.m. PT on March 21, 2006.

Women and UFC

6 Sep

Imagine a Saturday night like every other Saturday night walking to the neighbourhood sports bar with your best friend for a pitcher of cold beer and some hot bbq wings. Now fast-forward about an hour or so and all you see around you is half drunk men filled with excitement and screaming and shouting at the massive tv screens showing their favourite pay-per-view sports event, UFC; and you’re the only two women insight.

Congratulations, you are a woman UFC fan. You are a myth, a gift from god to all men and a new breed of women who are not forced by their significant others to attend this event. My best friend and I are part of this small group of avid UFC fans. We have been lucky enough to attend a couple of these exciting fights in person and most guys who find out about this are both shocked and amused.

Personally I’m not sure why this is such a big deal but after talking with so many other UFC fans we realized how odd we are, and that’s in a good way. Hahaha
I remembered befriending a group of guys in Las Vegas when we went to watch UFC 94 GSP vs Penn. They were amazed at how two young girls went online found tickets, found a great deal for a 5 star hotel package during UFC/Superbowl weekend, just to come and watch their favourite fighter. They weren’t the only ones and they would not be the only ones either. This is how we usually explain why we attend these events in person:

- we need a vacation
- There’s this great outlet mall or amazing shopping centre close by
- We found an amazing flight and hotel deal
- And be honest UFC fighters can be damn ugly and “mashed up” in the face but they have amazing bodies and they’re wearing pretty much next to nothing. (Sounds awful, but we all know we’re not dating or married to Greek gods with amazing abs)

That’s the girl in us answering people’s questions, but there’s so much more to it. We actually take the time to research every fighter for each event and their backgrounds. We can argue about fighters’ skills, training and fighting tricks like any other guy, if not we’re even more informed about it than they are. (Yeah, I said it! We know more than most of you boys out there!)…

The only bad thing about being a woman and being a fan of UFC is being stereotyped as one of those women who wear the most inappropriate outfits to either the actual events or to the sports bars showing them. We’re talking skanky low cut rags made out of polyester and showing off trashy tattoos that starts from the toes and swirls around the legs and to the never ever wanna know about land. DISGUSTING!

So I guess this post is a message to say we are out there and respect us women fans and to make a plea to those newly converted women, who want to join us, please remember you’re still a woman. Be ladylike and wear appropriate attire, Tshirts and jeans are still trendy!
